About Dr. Murphy

I'm Dr. Murphy, also known as Dr. John. I’m a psychologist (PSY:22783) located in the Los Angeles area, with an office in Beverly Hills. My Ph.D. is in general psychology and I am a member of the American Psychological Association, the world's largest organization for psychologists. While I was in graduate school, I became a hypnotist and received my certification as a clinical hypnotherapist through the American Council for Hypnotist Examiners.

Dr. Murphy demonstrating techniques for "The Doctors"

I'm originally from the New Jersey area where I earned by B.A. in psychology at Rutgers University. I then attended Capella University for both my M.S. and Ph.D. in General Psychology. I completed both my pre-doc and post-doc as a psychological assistant to psychologists in private practice. I'm now a licensed clinical psychologist (License: PSY22783), providing one-on-one, individual sessions.

My dissertation was about the relationship between global self-esteem and fear-of-flying in adults, where I explored how general self-esteem relates to a specific phobia based upon gender, age, and other factors. Want to read it? Click here (requires adobe PDF viewer). Or, to see the PowerPoint version, click here (requires MS powerpoint).

Throughout the years, I've taught classes in phobias, smoking cessation, weight loss, relaxation techniques, and for incorporating cognitive/behavioral techniques in hypnotherapy. As part of my post-doc, I taught on-going courses through "The Last Drag" program in Hollywood to help people quit smoking. I was part of an A&E program called "Airline," which helped a client overcome her fear of flying. I'm also scheduled to appear on "The Doctors" helping another client with the same issue.

My interest as a clinician drifted towards weight loss/weight management, through my own efforts to lose weight and then, to prevent future weight gain. In helping others do the same, I’ve studied and integrated psychological concepts of behavioralism, self-control, and motivation in a program which you can explore to help bring about weight loss.

I am also a supervisor to a psychologist-in-training, who is serving as my psych assistant. To learn more about him, read below!

About John Carroll

John Carroll, M.A., the main therapist and care coordinator.

John Carroll is currently a psychology assistant (PSB#35821) working for Dr. Murphy.  He received his masters in Psychology at the University of Santa Monica and his B.A. at Amherst College. He’s currently enrolled in a doctoral program for Clinical Psychology which will be completed in June of 2012.  The topic of his dissertation is on how walking alleviates depression.

He’s currently working under Dr. Murphy’s supervision to assist clients who have anxiety, phobias, or who want to quit smoking. To this end, he uses applied relaxation, hypnosis, and psychotherapy.

Through Dr. Murphy, John has learned about the Modern Walking Therapy and realized that it is the ideal program for the modern client. The Modern Walking Therapy system integrates natural movement into the modern client’s busy life. The program focuses on positively affecting behavioral patterns through walking and a realistic nutrition program in conjunction with individual and group therapy.

From the perspective of a personal trainer, the Modern Walking Therapy is the next step in weight loss and depression relief because it's practical and focuses on long term success.  The two biggest obstacles in achieving weight loss are time and intensity; the Modern Walking Therapy eliminates both of those obstacles.

His role here is to support clients individually and in groups to achieve long term physical, cognitive, and emotional well being. His interests outside of the office include public speaking, playing the guitar, and DJing.
