I'm Dr. Murphy, also known as Dr. John or Dr. M, a psychologist who helps people in the Los Angeles area with their anxiety and phobia issues. My Ph.D. is in general psychology and I am a member of the American Psychological Association, the world's largest organization for psychologists. While I was in graduate school, I became a hypnotist and later received my certification as a clinical hypnotherapist through the American Council for Hypnotist Examiners.
I'm originally from the New Jersey area where I earned by B.A. in psychology at Rutgers University. I then attended Capella University for both my M.S. and Ph.D. in General Psychology. I completed both my pre-doc and post-doc as a psychological assistant to psychologists in private practice. I'm now a licensed clinical psychologist (License: 22783), providing both one-on-one sessions as well as hypnosis audio programs, including a demonstration program you can listen to for free.
My dissertation was about the relationship between global self-esteem and fear-of-flying in adults, where I explored how general self-esteem relates to a specific phobia based upon gender, age, and other factors. Throughout the years, I've taught classes in phobias, smoking cessation, relaxation techniques, and incorporating cognitive/behavioral techniques in hypnotherapy. As part of my post-doc, I taught on-going courses through "The Last Drag" program in Hollywood to help people quit smoking.
I was part of an A&E program called "Airline," which helped a client overcome her fear of flying. I've also recently appeared on E!'s "Extreme Dr. 90210" where I helped someone to quit smoking.
