The One Page Summary
For those of you who are new--I'm Dr. Murphy, a licensed psychologist who employs cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT) and hypnotherapy to help people with anxiety issues, as well as other areas that are germane to CBT & hypnosis, such as quitting smoking and weight loss. Learn more about me...
Most people I work with want the speed and power of hypnosis combined with the security and safety of a psychotherapist. Keep in mind that while hypnosis may speed things along and certainly promotes relaxation, long-term change is rarely instant! Learn more about the different types of therapists out there...
I'll often perform stage-hypnosis shows. It's where I get volunteers from a large crowd, hypnotize them, and make them do funny and fascinating things to entertain and educate. It started as a hobby during graduate school. Now, through the shows, I meet a lot of people who are either looking for a hypnotist or a psychotherapist. I'm both! But I only work on certain issues (mostly related to anxiety), and I use techniques that require client participation, even homework! This might not be a match for you. If not, I can refer you to someone more suited for you. Learn more about who I work best with...
I receive referrals mostly from medical doctors who have patients who have anxiety but don't want to take medication, or need to quit smoking, or can't seem to lose weight. My psychotherapy colleagues send me clients who can't fly, or can't drive, or can't perform on stage. I refer for a variety of reasons and do so many times each week. So if you're a healthcare worker in the L.A. area keep in touch, especially if you have a particular clinical focus or specialty.
Just what are my specialties? As a hybrid psychotherapist-hypnotist, I specialize in anxiety disorders, including Link Namegeneralized anxiety, phobias, and OCD. I also focus on self-esteem, especially as it relates to relationships and social anxiety.
Before clients come in, it's helpful if they know a little about psychotherapy in general as well as the specific instruments I use, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and hypnotherapy. You'll also want to look over my privacy policy, which explains both how I ensure privacy and how sometimes, by law, I have to break confidentiality. Have questions about session length? Or if you can drive home after hypnosis? Or if I receive text messages [yes]? I have my official FAQ section and a general policy section.
Wow, quite a lot to read, right? I pride myself on providing lots and lots of information. It removes a lot of guesswork and it lets you know if we're meant to work together. If we are, you'll want to either e-mail me or go here to setup an appointment. There are some forms you can fill out before your first session and here's some price & billing information. Parking information and directions to my office are here. I'll do house calls, I'll even fly with you, just know that I'll charge based upon time (and availability).
Do you have an issue not brought up on this website but live in L.A. and looking for a qualified therapist? Want someone with a psychodynamic focus? Send me an e-mail, and I can probably direct you to a few good people.
